Prayer for a discerning mind

When God planned on destroying Sodom and Gomorrah, he gave Lot and his family the opportunity to save themselves before the big destruction. But what did his sons-in-law do? They took the message as a joke and guess what?……….. their only window of salvation was lost!

We feel down and lost in this world sometimes. We believe God might be delaying that big change we need in our life or ignoring our numerous prayer requests. ……….But remember that even though we were sinners, God still sent his only son to die for our salvation. So what other big sign are we looking for?

God might be speaking to us indirectly through the words or actions of others. The question is how do we know which ones to take to heart or the ones to ignore?

Do we expect God to speak to us only through a burning Bush or through visions only? Then we would forever be misled and lose out on the BIG things in life.

The Bible talks of the massive sin in Gomorrah so I doubt that Lot’s sons-in-laws were any different. But God still gave them a second chance  due to their relation to Lot , unfortunately even with God’s grace of salvation and window of opportunity, they missed out.

God might be speaking to us indirectly through the words or actions of others. The question is how do we know which ones to take to heart or the ones to ignore?

My prayer for us all is that God grants us a discerning mind to be able to know which voice to listen to.  Lord help us understand that you are able to work your wonders even through ordinary human beings like ourselves. AMEN!

Don’t forget to share this post and your thoughts!

Vengeance is for the Lord

First published: 15 November 2015

Genesis 4:15
But the Lord said to him, “Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no-one who found him would kill him.

How quick we are to judge others and punish them for wrongs committed which have impacted either directly or indirectly on us. With the great sin committed by Cain, God was still merciful on him and in a twist of fate, would rather punish anyone who laid a hand on Cain. A human mind would be thinking, “What is wrong with God?”. God has his reasons we just have to learn to trust in Him and his timelines. His ways are not our ways.

Irrespective of what we face in life, we shouldn’t be quick to exact or pronounce punishments on wrongdoers. Our task is to love and show mercy, God will handle the rest.

Let’s pray for the strength of character both physically and spiritually to help us achieve this.

Amen.

Other thoughts my curious mind picked up
In the same chapter verse 17, mention is made of Cain’s wife. Who was she? Where did she come from? As we all know there was just Adam and Eve and their kids. My curious mind decided to check out google. All information I came across seemed to suggest that Cain might have married his sister as during that time there were no laws prohibiting incest.

What are your thoughts?

What did he do wrong?

Genesis 12:17-19 New International Version (NIV)

But the LORD inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram’s wife Sarai. So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?” he said. “Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife? Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!”

My first reaction to this verse was, ‘but why?’, ‘what wrong did Pharoah commit?’ To be fair, he had no idea of Abram’s lie so why did God not punish Abram directly? Instead, he inflicted the innocent with this deadly disease. We never seem to understand His ways.

I set out to seek the views of others and these are the common conclusions and themes that I came across:

1. Fulfill His promise to make Abram the father of all nations

Although Abram sinned, God forgave him as he always does with us. He did not decide to pull back his promise. I am sure anyone of us would not have hesitated to cancel the promise made.

God’s plans concerning you in life remains unchanged so press on towards your goal with confidence knowing God is with you along each step of the way.

2. Prevent Pharoah from sinning

Pharoah would have committed a great sin had he laid with Sarai. Same goes for Sarai, the sin of adultery which God frowns upon would have been committed. Would Abram have been able to forgive himself? How would Abram and Sarai relate after this?  The infliction of the disease by God however prevented all this awkwardness.

In life we might come across some downs and stumbling blocks and may wonder if God really cares as we are made to believe.

The truth is you might be going through the worse to protect you from the worst.

3. Demonstration of his love irrespective of our sins

In the midst of all the lies and sins, we should be comforted by the fact that we have a loving and caring fathers who is always ready to forgive us. His kind of love does not keep record of wrongs.

Amen!

Love and the Holy Trinity

Genesis 3:21-22

Genesis 3 : 21-22

Genesis 3:21

This verse is a clear demonstration of God’s love. Even after Adam and Eve disobeyed Him, he still clothed them as a loving father would to hide their nakedness and shame.

After rebuking them he still helped to cover up their shame.

In life we should not remain angry forever. We should learn to forgive and extend a hand of love to others irrespective of how they treat us like God did.

Genesis 3:22

The ‘us’ in the memory verse kept me thinking. It was only God who was in existence so who was He referring to? As a Catholic, I believe this gives credence to the existence of the Holy Trinity; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Amen!
